The Junior Biology Society learned lab procedures for growing bacteria samples on agar agar. The young scientists went on a mission around the school to swab surfaces that they thought might harbor bacteria. They then rubbed the sample swab on agar in a Petri dish. At their next meeting, they will view their bacteria cultures under microscopes.

Students in Junior Biology Society participated in a conservation project to save the monarch butterflies. Common milkweed, the host plant for the butterflies, is often destroyed as a weed or removed to make room for agriculture. In turn, monarch numbers are now 10% of what they used to be. To help bring back these iconic and important pollinators, the young biologists planted milkweed seeds to grow in their yards. They also made posters to spread awareness.
