The Independence community came together for an afternoon of learning, connection, and support during the recent Tech Help for Seniors event hosted by Independence High School students at the Independence Civic Center.
Seniors from across the community stopped in throughout the afternoon to receive one-on-one assistance with their personal devices. Students shared their knowledge and patience while helping participants navigate everyday technology tasks, creating a welcoming environment filled with conversation, laughter, and newfound confidence.
Attendees received guidance on a variety of practical skills, including clearing and recording voicemail messages, organizing photos, searching text messages, bookmarking important websites, and adjusting accessibility settings to better fit their needs. Students also introduced participants to newer tools such as QR codes and artificial intelligence, while helping them better understand email navigation and basic security settings.
Participants brought a wide range of devices, including cell phones, tablets, Kindles, and laptops, and appreciated the personalized attention they received from the student volunteers. Coffee and treats added to the friendly atmosphere, making the event both productive and enjoyable.
“Events like this highlight the strong sense of community within Independence Local Schools and provide meaningful opportunities for students to serve others while building communication and leadership skills,” said Principal Kelli Cogan. “The district looks forward to continuing programs that connect generations and support lifelong learning for all members of the community.”
