Independence Primary School has been recognized by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce for its outstanding commitment to student learning, achievement, and whole-child development.
After submitting a comprehensive application through the National Blue Ribbon Schools process, Independence Primary School was selected as a 2025 Blue Ribbon School. While the federal recognition program was discontinued and transitioned to the states this year, schools who were recognized are still being highlighted for excellence in education.
“I am so excited for our staff, especially after all the hard work that went into the application process for this,” said Principal Jodie Hughes. “This is such an honor and something to be incredibly proud of for our whole community! I am so happy and blessed to be part of this strong team of educators and amazing families and students.”
Independence Primary School’s application showcased a strong culture of collaboration, innovative learning opportunities, and a deep commitment to meeting the needs of every student. From hands-on STEM experiences and project-based learning to a focus on literacy through the Science of Reading, the school continues to create an environment where students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
In a letter to the school, State Superintendent Stephen D. Dackin commended Independence Primary School for this achievement, noting that the recognition reflects the school’s dedication to “providing exceptional instruction and meaningful opportunities that make a lasting impact on students’ lives.”
The letter also highlighted the school’s alignment with Ohio’s educational priorities, including literacy achievement, student growth, and creating safe and supportive learning environments where all students can reach their full potential.
“This recognition is a reflection of our entire school community,” said Superintendent Kelli Cogan. “Our teachers, staff, families, and students work together every day to create a positive, engaging environment where every child is supported and challenged to succeed.”
This is the third time Independence Primary School has been awarded the Blue Ribbon. The school was recognized for its academic excellence in 1994, prompting the City of Independence to rename the school entrance off Hillside Road as “Blue Ribbon Drive.” In 2012, the school was one of 14 in Ohio to win the award, recognized for high test scores and kindergarten readiness.
