Independence Middle School Sixth Graders Devote Day to Serving Others

For the past 12 years, sixth-grade students at Independence Middle School, along with their teachers, administrators and parent helpers, dedicate a day to helping residents of Independence with fall clean up of yards.

On October 21, 71 students, four teachers and nine parents went out into the community to rake leaves in the community.  The team has been partnering with the Civic Center through the years and the event has become something that both seniors and students/teachers look forward to. The group was able to clean up over 15 homes and learn so many life lessons outside the classroom. “We had the perfect fall day to head into the community and help some local seniors. Teaching kids to be engaged and active citizens and to take responsibility in making their city a great place to live is something I’m really passionate about. I’m so proud of the kids, and so lucky to have such a great team to work alongside each day,” said teacher Michelle Koussa.
