Independence Local Schools is inviting community members, local business leaders and professionals from a variety of industries to help students explore career opportunities and prepare for life after high school through the new Independence Career Network.
The initiative, coordinated by Career Specialist Rachel Barbiaux, aims to build a network of professionals willing to share their knowledge, experiences and expertise with students. By connecting students with individuals working in different fields, the district hopes to provide meaningful opportunities for career exploration and a better understanding of the education, skills and experiences needed to pursue various career pathways.
The Independence Career Network offers several ways for community members to get involved, depending on their interests and availability.
Opportunities include:
Career Conversations: Sharing personal career journeys, professional experiences and advice with students.
Career Panels: Participating in discussions that introduce students to different professions, industries and career pathways.
Job Shadowing: Welcoming students into professional settings to observe daily responsibilities and gain firsthand insight into specific careers.
Classroom Presentations: Visiting classrooms to discuss career experiences, industry knowledge and professional skills.
Mentoring: Providing guidance and encouragement to students as they explore their interests and future goals.
The district also hopes to connect with businesses and organizations that may offer internships, apprenticeships, summer employment or entry-level opportunities for students.
Community members do not need to commit to a specific activity or time commitment to join the network. Instead, interested individuals are encouraged to complete a brief online survey indicating their professional backgrounds, areas of interest and preferred ways to participate. The district will use the information to identify potential connections as opportunities become available.
Completing the survey does not obligate anyone to participate in an activity. Individuals who are unable to volunteer immediately can also indicate their willingness to be contacted about future opportunities.
Through the Independence Career Network, the district hopes to strengthen connections between its schools and the broader community while helping students make informed decisions about their futures.
Community members, alumni, parents and local professionals are encouraged to participate and share the opportunity with friends, family members and colleagues who may be interested in supporting Independence students.
