Independence Primary School students celebrated Constitution Day on September 17 with a morning that combined school spirit, community and hands-on lessons about American government.
Students arriving for the Family/Buddy Walk to School Day were greeted by American flags lining the entrance to IPS, along with special appearances by some familiar “Founding Fathers.” The patriotic welcome helped set the stage for a day focused on learning about the U.S. Constitution and the principles of American government.
Throughout the day, students participated in age-appropriate activities designed to bring civics to life. They took part in voting activities, learned about the three branches of government and explored the Bill of Rights.
The activities gave students an opportunity to learn more about how the government works while encouraging questions, discussion and teamwork.
Constitution Day is observed each year on September 17, commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. IPS students marked the occasion by connecting that history to engaging classroom experiences and celebrating what it means to be an informed citizen.
The celebration extended to Independence Middle School, where students put their knowledge to the test with a Constitution Day Challenge. Students traveled throughout IMS answering questions about the Constitution and U.S. history.
The challenge added a little friendly competition to the day while giving students an opportunity to demonstrate what they know. Congratulations to the Constitution Day Challenge winners and to all of the IMS students who participated in the activity.
