From leading marketing initiatives to helping organizations prepare for the rapidly changing world of artificial intelligence, Independence High School Class of 2009 graduate Elizabeth Juran has built a career centered on communication, strategy, and innovation.
Today, Juran serves as Director of Operations at SmarterX, an artificial intelligence research and consulting firm that works with organizations to better understand and responsibly adopt AI. In her role, she helps guide operations for a company focused on educating business leaders about how AI is reshaping industries, workplaces, education, and society.
Her path to the emerging field of AI began long before artificial intelligence became part of everyday conversation.
After graduating from Independence High School, Juran earned a bachelor’s degree in Communication with concentrations in Public Relations and Interpersonal and Organizational Communication from the University of Mount Union. While there, she was elected as a two-time Varsity Women’s Swimming & Diving team captain and served as a Preview Program Coordinator, Student Ambassador, and Newsletter Editor, experiences that strengthened her leadership and communication skills. She later completed a master’s degree in Communication Management from John Carroll University.
Juran began her professional career through marketing and communications internships before joining Corrigan Krause as a marketing coordinator. She later spent more than seven years at Ready North, a marketing agency where she advanced through several leadership positions, including Consultant, Partner Program Manager, Senior Consultant, and Director of Operations.
In 2024, she joined Sherwin-Williams as Digital Strategy Manager, helping shape digital marketing strategy for one of the nation’s largest companies before moving to SmarterX in early 2026.
As artificial intelligence continues to transform nearly every industry, Juran now finds herself helping organizations prepare for what comes next. SmarterX believes AI education is becoming essential for every business, and the company works with leaders to develop responsible, human-centered approaches to implementing the technology.
Juran also remains active in the AI community through MAICON, one of the nation’s leading conferences focused on marketing and artificial intelligence, owned and operated by SmarterX. Having been involved with the conference since its beginning, she recently shared that she has personally witnessed its growth and the increasing importance of AI education for professionals across industries.
Throughout her career, Juran has embraced new opportunities, adapted to changing technologies, and continued learning as industries have evolved. Her journey reflects the importance of curiosity, communication, and lifelong learning, qualities that continue to open doors in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Looking back, Juran credits her experiences at Independence High School with helping her discover that she thrives in close-knit communities, where meaningful relationships and collaboration flourish. That realization influenced her decision to attend a smaller college, pursue a graduate program with intimate cohorts, and seek out the professional environments where she does her best work today. “Participating in athletics was the most meaningful experience of my high school career. It shaped my college experience and ultimately taught me incredibly valuable life skills, including time management, teamwork, accountability, and grit.”
When asked to give advice to current Independence students who are interested in communications, marketing, technology, or AI, she shared, “My biggest advice is to stay curious, start building skills early, and focus on being adaptable. Communications, marketing, technology, and AI are fields that are changing fast. That can feel intimidating, but it’s also a huge opportunity if you focus on continued learning, self-teaching, and experimentation.”
Juran’s career serves as another example of the many ways Independence graduates are making an impact in their professions and communities. Her story demonstrates that the foundation built at Independence Local Schools can lead graduates in many different directions, including fields that didn’t even exist when they were students.
