The Independence High School Class of 2026 crossed the commencement stage on May 31, but their story extends far beyond graduation day. This accomplished group of 72 graduates leaves behind a remarkable legacy of academic achievement, service, leadership, and determination while embarking on a wide range of exciting postsecondary pathways.
The Class of 2026 earned an impressive 667 college credits, completed 126 Advanced Placement exams, and accumulated 325 diploma seals. Twenty-four graduates achieved a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher, while 47 students earned an Honors Diploma. Additionally, 18 students graduated from Cuyahoga Valley Career Center programs, 13 earned industry credentials, and five graduates will continue their athletic careers as NCAA student-athletes.
The class was also recognized for its outstanding scholarship success. Graduates were offered more than $5.45 million in scholarships and accepted nearly $1.5 million in awards, including $46,300 in local scholarships made possible through the generosity of community organizations, families, and alumni.
As they begin the next chapter of their lives, members of the Class of 2026 will attend colleges, universities, military programs, technical schools, and training programs across the country and beyond. Graduates will continue their education at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio University, The Ohio State University, Ohio State University Newark, Kent State University, Norfolk State University, Miami University, Cleveland State University, Tiffin University, Cuyahoga Community College, Loyola University Chicago, Ohio Wesleyan University, Great Lakes Maritime Academy, Seattle University, John Carroll University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Western Michigan University, University of Akron, University of Colorado Boulder, Florida Atlantic University, Ohio Technical College, Walsh University, Grove City College, Bowling Green State University, Kenyon College, the University of Tennessee, Cuyahoga Valley Career Center, University Hospitals Paramedic Program, Akron General Hospital Paramedic School, and the United States Air Force. Additional graduates will pursue apprenticeships and career training through MCPC, Ro-Check Electrical, IBEW Local 38, the International Union of Operating Engineers, and Liceo Scientifico Galileo Galilei Potenza in Italy, while others will enter the workforce directly through full-time employment opportunities.
Graduates will pursue a diverse range of careers and fields of study. The largest group is entering health and medical professions, including nursing, pre-med, biology, radiology, exercise science, emergency medical services, speech pathology, occupational therapy, and public health. Others will study business, finance, accounting, economics, engineering, cybersecurity, aerospace engineering, nuclear engineering, maritime engineering, education, music, history, criminal justice, anthropology, and the arts.
Several graduates will enter skilled trades and apprenticeship programs, including the International Union of Operating Engineers, IBEW Local 38, electrical trades, and technical career pathways. Others will begin full-time employment, bringing their talents directly into the workforce.
Throughout their years at Independence High School, the Class of 2026 embraced opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. They excelled in academics, athletics, music, visual arts, career-technical education, service organizations, and leadership roles. Their accomplishments reflect the district's commitment to cultivating a legacy of excellence while preparing students for success in college, careers, military service, and life.
Superintendent Kelli Cogan reflected on the impact of the graduating class and the promise of their future. "Class of 2026, I hope you leave here believing that you are capable of more than you realize, that kindness matters, that failure is not final, and that wherever you go next, you carry this community with you. You are part of the story of Independence Local Schools, and the legacy you leave behind here is only the beginning of the legacy you will continue to build in the years ahead."
The Class of 2026 selected "Slipping Through My Fingers" by ABBA as its class song, pink as its class color, wildflowers as its class flower, and the memorable class motto, "Dang Diggity!" inspired by longtime educator Mr. Scott Maretka.
As these graduates move forward into universities, military service, apprenticeships, careers, and new adventures, they carry with them the pride, traditions, and support of the Independence community. The future is bright for the Class of 2026, and Independence Local Schools looks forward to celebrating all they will accomplish in the years ahead.
