At the April 21 Independence Board of Education meeting, the school community welcomed Mr. Matt Faska as the next principal of Independence High School. Faska and his family attended the meeting and enjoyed meeting members of the Independence community. His contract was officially approved at the April 2 special meeting.
Faska was selected following a comprehensive and highly competitive search process that included valuable input from staff, families, and community members. Stakeholders contributed through surveys, interview committees, and conversations, helping to identify a leader who reflects the district’s values and vision.
Faska currently serves as an assistant principal at Hilliard Davidson High School, where he oversees several academic departments, including social studies, math, and business, as well as custodial operations. He brings extensive experience in instructional leadership, school safety, and student support systems. His work has included leading the implementation of End-of-Course assessments, coordinating attendance and intervention supports, and strengthening building-wide discipline systems and PBIS practices. He also supervises all school clubs and student organizations.
In addition to his administrative experience, Faska has demonstrated a strong commitment to school culture and student engagement. He has worked closely with staff and students through leadership teams, school improvement initiatives, and advisory programs. He has also overseen student recognition efforts, supported grant initiatives, and managed key operational responsibilities that contribute to a positive and effective school environment.
Prior to his administrative role, Faska served as a high school social studies teacher for 10 years at Licking Heights High School in Pataskala, Ohio, where he built meaningful relationships with students and delivered engaging, relevant instruction.
Faska also brings extensive experience in student leadership and extracurricular programs, having coached multiple sports at the high school level, including basketball, football, baseball, and golf. His background in athletics has helped him build strong relationships with students while promoting teamwork, accountability, and school pride.
He holds a Master of Arts in Educational Administration and principal licensure from The Ohio State University and a Bachelor of Arts from Baldwin Wallace University.
“Throughout the interview process, particularly during the final scenario-based round, Mr. Faska stood out for his student-centered approach, collaborative leadership style, and dedication to fostering a positive, unified school culture,” said Superintendent Keli Cogan. “His focus on building strong relationships, maintaining high expectations, and supporting continuous growth aligns closely with the mission of Independence Local Schools.”
Faska is married to Amanda, who is a first-grade teacher. They have two children, Leo, age 4, and Emma, age 2. He grew up in Fairview Park and is excited to be closer to family while he and his wife raise their children.
