Independence Middle School Students Refresh, Recharge, and Build Resilience During Mental Health Day

Students at Independence Middle School (IMS) took time to focus on their well-being during the school’s Mental Health Day on April 2. The special event provided students with meaningful opportunities to learn practical strategies for managing stress, building confidence, and supporting their emotional health.

At IMS, staff recognize that being a middle school student comes with a unique set of challenges. Educators believe that teaching students how to care for their emotional well-being is just as important as academic learning. With the generous support of the PTO, the day was designed to be an uplifting and restorative experience where students could reset, connect with peers, and discover helpful tools to feel balanced and supported.

Throughout the day, students rotated through six interactive stations focused on developing healthy habits and coping skills. Activities included mindfulness techniques to help students stay grounded and present, movement activities that highlighted the connection between physical activity and mental health, and a hands-on sensory bottle project designed to support focus and relaxation. Students also participated in yoga sessions that emphasized stretching and breathing, spent time with therapy dogs that offered comfort and stress relief, and contributed to a collaborative mural that encouraged creativity, self-expression, and a sense of community. An alternative coloring area was available for students with allergies or those who preferred not to interact with the dogs.

The goal of Mental Health Day was for every student to walk away with at least one new strategy they can use when they feel overwhelmed. Staff members encouraged families to continue the conversation at home by asking students which station they enjoyed most and how they might use the skills they learned in their daily lives.

Independence Middle School extends its sincere appreciation to the PTO and school staff who helped make this meaningful day possible, and to families for their continued support of students’ growth both in and out of the classroom.
