On March 3, teachers across Independence Local Schools participated in a comprehensive Professional Development Day focused on strengthening instruction and supporting student success.
The Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessments, under the direction of Assistant Superintendent Natalie Matthews, designed a full day of workshops that allowed educators to choose sessions aligned to their interests, grade levels, and professional goals.
The schedule offered a wide range of topics spanning preschool through high school. Sessions on artificial intelligence introduced teachers to beginner and advanced strategies for using AI tools to support lesson design, differentiation, and productivity. Educators explored platforms such as Google Gemini, NotebookLM, and Wayground to enhance instruction and assessment practices.
Literacy remained a strong focus throughout the day. Elementary staff engaged in LETRS Unit 4 training centered on phonology and early literacy development, while secondary English language arts teachers worked on curriculum alignment, writing strategies, and supporting elaboration in student writing. Additional sessions highlighted differentiation for gifted learners and strategies for supporting twice exceptional students.
Science teachers participated in professional learning tied to the district’s new middle school science curriculum, while other educators explored Pear Assessments to better track student progress and prepare students for state assessments. Technology integration sessions included Google tools, Screencastify, and immersive learning through Prisms VR modules.
Social emotional learning and student support were also central themes. Workshops addressed trauma informed care, developmental relationships, functional skills in early childhood settings, and inclusive practices for students with special needs.
By offering choice based learning and practical, classroom ready strategies, the district ensured that teachers left the day with tools they could immediately implement.
Professional learning days like this reflect the district’s ongoing commitment to growth, collaboration, and excellence in teaching. When educators strengthen their practice, students across Independence benefit every day.
