Independence Primary School students packed their imaginations and set off on a literary journey during this year’s Right to Read Week, themed “Book an Adventure!” From February 23–27, hallways were filled with excitement as every story became a trip to take, and our students were ready for takeoff.

The week kicked off with Tourist Day, where students sported loud shirts, fanny packs, and socks with sandals, proving they were prepared for any adventure. On Around the World Day, classrooms celebrated cultures from across the globe, highlighting the beauty of diversity through clothing, symbols, and vibrant colors.

Midweek brought out our brave readers for Explorer Day, complete with safari vests and cargo pants, as students dove into books that took them deep into jungles, across deserts, and beyond. Near the end of the week, the Beach/Tropical Day added a splash of sunshine to our learning, with Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses brightening even the chilliest February day.

The grand finale, Destination Day, transformed each grade level into a unique location, from Hollywood to the Wild West and even magical destinations inspired by beloved stories. Every classroom became a passport to a new experience.

Throughout the week, students participated in special read-alouds with guest readers that included staff, community members, and even some local children's authors. They also enjoyed buddy reading activities and engaging literacy lessons that reinforced the joy and importance of reading. Most importantly, they were reminded that books have the power to transport us anywhere.

“At Independence Primary School, Right to Read Week wasn’t just about dressing up, it was about celebrating curiosity, creativity, and the lifelong adventure found in every page,” said Principal Jodie Hughes. "Many thanks to Lauren Panek, our media specialist, for coordinating an incredible experience for our students."
