how to dress

January 27, 2026

Dear Independence Families,

This winter has been particularly challenging, and I want to thank you for your continued patience and partnership. Our goal is always to strike the right balance between providing high-quality learning experiences for our students while also ensuring their safety.

At this time, Independence Local Schools will be open tomorrow (Wednesday), January 28. The National Weather Service (NWS) has downgraded the cold weather warning that was in effect last night and today to a cold weather advisory for tonight and tomorrow. Based on the most current information available, schools will operate on a normal schedule.

Even with the downgrade, it will still be very cold in the morning. I will continue to closely monitor weather conditions throughout the evening and early tomorrow morning.

Please note the following:

  • If conditions change and schools must close, families will be notified via email, text message, phone call, and postings on local news stations and on our district website, app, and social media accounts—preferably before 10 p.m. tonight.

  • Please ensure students dress appropriately for the cold weather, including warm coats, hats, gloves, and appropriate footwear.

  • A weather graphic is included with this message for additional reference.

Family discretion: We recognize that circumstances vary for every family. If you believe that sending your student to school tomorrow would be unsafe, please contact your child’s principal, and the absence will be excused.

Thank you again for your understanding, patience, and support as we navigate this difficult winter season together.

Warm regards,

Kelli Cogan, Superintendent
