A group of enthusiastic sixth-grade leaders from Independence Middle School spent last week growing their confidence, developing new skills, and learning alongside peers from across Northeast Ohio at the Brooklyn City Schools Hurricane Leadership Conference.
The event brought together student leaders from several districts for a day of collaboration, inspiration, and hands-on activities designed to strengthen communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Independence students eagerly embraced each challenge, participating in group workshops, leadership rotations, and team-building sessions.
IMS students made an outstanding impression. They shared ideas, embraced new perspectives, and demonstrated the values of respect, responsibility, and school pride throughout the conference.
“We are so proud of the leadership our students demonstrated,” said Principal Haley Mueller who accompanied them along with teacher Ken DeAngelis. “They represented Independence with positivity, curiosity, and a willingness to learn from others.”
The students are excited to bring their new strategies and insights back to the classroom—and to continue leading the way as role models within the Independence community.
