Across Independence Local Schools, students and staff came together on November 11 to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served our nation in the armed forces. From heartfelt performances to thoughtful assemblies, the district’s Veterans Day celebrations reflected deep gratitude and respect for those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms.
Students from Independence High and Middle School gathered in the high school auditorium for a moving Veterans Day assembly. The program included student presentations, music, and reflections recognizing the courage and service of local veterans. The event encouraged students to pause and remember the importance of service, sacrifice, and community. There even were patriotic performances by the IMS band and choir. The event warmly welcomed veterans from the community and gave students a meaningful opportunity to personally thank them for their service.
As part of the program, eighth-grade students presented their Honor Flight fundraiser. After meeting members of a local chapter during their annual Washington, D.C. trip, the students were inspired to help support veterans here in Ohio. Honor Flight is a national nonprofit organization that honors America’s veterans by transporting them to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice. These trips allow veterans to reflect, connect with fellow servicemembers, and share their stories—completely free of charge. Originally created to serve World War II veterans, the program has since expanded to include those who served in the Korean and Vietnam wars, as well as critically ill veterans from any era. Eighth-grade students will be collecting donations to support this cause.
Independence Primary School student leadership shined brightly during this year’s Veterans Day celebration. Our IPS Student Council members proudly led the program with special speaking parts, guiding guests through the ceremony and honoring those who have served our country. Students in grades K–4 showcased their hard work and patriotism through song, as each grade level performed meaningful patriotic pieces that highlighted the importance and gratitude behind this day. Additionally, all our learners contributed through artwork and displays throughout the building — creating a school-wide tribute filled with red, white, and blue.
This event truly highlighted the voices and talents of our students as they honored and celebrated the veterans in our community. We are incredibly proud of our speakers, our young singers, and our artists for the heart they put into making this day so special.
Through these districtwide events, Independence Local Schools united to show appreciation, patriotism, and pride—ensuring that the sacrifices of America’s heroes are remembered and honored by every generation.
