The first meeting of Superintendent Kelli Cogan’s Student Advisory Group is officially in the books. Held on Monday, October 27, the meeting brought together student representatives from grades 6-12 from Independence Local Schools to share their voices, ideas, and perspectives.

Cogan welcomed the group by emphasizing the importance of making decisions with students—not for them. The meeting focused on building relationships, setting goals, and exploring the power of student voice. Students participated in team-building activities, identified common threads and leadership styles, and brainstormed ways to strengthen the school community throughout the year.

“Lots of ideas were generated today, and I’m excited to work with this group throughout the year,” said Cogan. “Their excitement and passion are contagious!”

The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Group will meet quarterly to provide input on district initiatives, share student perspectives, and help shape a positive and inclusive school culture across Independence Local Schools.
