The safety of our students is always our top priority. Recently, we’ve received reports of drivers failing to stop for school buses when students are getting on or off. This is not only dangerous—it’s against the law.
We want to remind everyone of Ohio’s school bus stopping law:

- When a school bus is stopped with red lights flashing and the stop arm extended, drivers in both directions must stop. If it’s a five lane (with turn lane) or a divided road like Route 21/Brecksville Road, the opposite direction does not have to stop.

- Drivers may not proceed until the bus resumes motion or the bus driver signals that it’s safe to do so.

- Violations can result in fines, license suspension, and, most importantly, serious injury to a child.

Our Transportation Department is working closely with the Independence Police Department to monitor bus routes and increase enforcement where needed. We ask for everyone’s help in keeping our students safe—please remain alert, slow down near bus stops, and always stop when you see the flashing red lights.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and commitment to our students’ safety.

With appreciation,

Kelli Cogan
