Luna DeJesús, a recent graduate of Independence High School and the Cosmetology program at Cuyahoga Valley Career Center (CVCC), taught by Ms. Fox, always knew she wanted more than a typical high school experience. Drawn to the opportunity to gain hands-on skills and build lasting friendships, Luna chose cosmetology—and she hasn’t looked back since.

“The program has shown me that if you want something badly enough, you have to put in the work for it,” Luna shared. That lesson has stayed with her as she prepares for the next chapter of her journey: attending Cleveland State University this fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business. Her long-term goal is to specialize in full-body waxing and eventually open her own salon.

One of Luna’s biggest inspirations has been her instructor, Ms. Fox. “Having Ms. Fox as my cosmetology instructor has truly been a blessing,” she said. “She always supported me and helped me with whatever I needed. She pushed all of us to achieve and succeed, no matter what our dreams were—and for that, I’m forever grateful.”

Among the many hands-on skills she developed in the program, Luna especially enjoyed learning how to wax eyebrows. “At first, we practiced on mannequins,” she explained. “But eventually, I got to work on my classmates—and that’s when I realized how much I really love doing it.”

Outside of school, Luna balances two jobs she enjoys—one at Cozumel Mexican Grill and another at Styler Beauty Zone. Though her schedule stays full, she makes the most of her free time by relaxing with friends and family, watching Guardians baseball, and catching up on binge-worthy shows.

When asked what advice she would offer to future students, Luna said, “Don’t let yourself fall behind. Stay focused and take what you’re doing seriously. Work hard for what you want—because in the end, you’ll be proud of everything you’ve achieved.”

With determination, talent, and a clear vision for the future, Luna is already well on her way to success.
