Independence Middle School’s sixth graders stepped into the spotlight this week as they participated in a “Mock Interview Bootcamp” designed to prepare them for future academic and career success. The event, held on May 22 and coordinated by Amanda Jaronowski, Career Specialist with the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center, gave students an early and impactful introduction to professional communication.
Grouped in pairs, each student came equipped with a mock resume that highlighted their interests, achievements, and extracurricular involvement. These documents served as the foundation for their mock interviews with volunteer professionals, during which students were encouraged to practice essential soft skills.
From making confident eye contact to speaking spontaneously about personal experiences, students were coached on how to navigate formal conversations with unfamiliar adults. Body language, tone, and thoughtful responses were key points of emphasis during the 15- to 20-minute interviews. Each student had the opportunity to rotate and meet with two different interviewers, gaining broader feedback and insight.
Teachers and volunteers noted the impressive poise and enthusiasm shown by the sixth graders. Many students expressed that the experience helped them feel more prepared for future interviews—whether for school programs, part-time jobs, or eventually college and careers.
The event is part of a broader career-readiness initiative at Independence Middle School in collaboration with the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center, aiming to equip students with both academic and interpersonal tools for long-term success.
