The 10th Annual Playhouse Square Dazzle Awards presented by Pat and John Chapman on May 17 were a night to remember for Independence High School.  With two students representing the school in the production and three nominated students, Independence left an unforgettable mark on this year’s celebration of high school musical theatre excellence.

Among the highlights of the evening was a moment that will be treasured for years to come: Jack Ottaviano receiving the 2025 Spirit of the Dazzle Awards, the school’s very first Dazzle Award. The honor recognizes a performer who radiates camaraderie, passion, and an infectiously positive attitude throughout the week of rehearsals. Selected by the Dazzle Awards Creative Team, Jack’s spirit didn’t just shine on stage—it lit up the entire Playhouse Square. Jack Ottaviano, Avery Vilcheck and Brooke Coldsnow performed live in high-energy production numbers that included a pre-taped performance outside on Euclid Avenue beneath the iconic Playhouse Square chandelier. In just one week, these students dedicated over 40 hours to rehearsals, learning choreography, music, and staging alongside students from across Northeast Ohio. Adding to the magic of the moment was a special guest: Connor Gallagher, Broadway choreographer known for Beetlejuice and choreographer for this year’s Dazzle Awards. Gallagher’s presence and guidance throughout the week brought Broadway-level energy to Cleveland, giving students an unforgettable taste of professional theatre.

Students expressed their extreme gratitude for the opportunity to learn from Playhouse Square and Broadway artists, giving them an unforgettable taste of professional theater and memories to last a lifetime.

Congratulations to Brooke Coldsnow who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Elsa Schraeder in The Sound of Music, placing her among the region’s top high school performers. Behind the scenes, Carmen Chen was chosen for Technical Apprentice, one of just a few students chosen to gain hands-on experience in production management and execution with professional mentors. Additionally, Robert Kalman was chosen for a Student Reporter all season, offering him a unique opportunity to document and share the Dazzle Awards experience from a student’s perspective and learn from industry professionals.
