On May 16, students, families, and educators gathered at Corporate College East to celebrate the 46th Annual Excellence in Education Awards, an inspiring event recognizing outstanding achievements by students with special needs, their peers, and dedicated educators. Organized annually by State Support Team Region 3 and the Educational Service Center (ESC) of Northeast Ohio, the awards highlight individuals who demonstrate extraordinary commitment, resilience, and advocacy in the field of special education.
Representing Independence Local Schools was junior Mae “Mes” Sheehan who was named recipient of the Outstanding Student Achievement Award. In addition, Mae received The R.A.Horn Outstanding Achievement Award, presented to one exemplary special education student from each of Ohio’s 16 State Support Team regions. It is named in honor of the late Dr. Raymond A. Horn, Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction Emeritus. This prestigious award recognizes a student’s remarkable performance.
Mes is a passionate student, peer advocate, and community volunteer. With a 3.8 GPA, two AP courses under her belt, and strong PSAT and AP exam scores, Mes exemplifies academic excellence and determination. A proud neurodivergent individual, Mes was diagnosed with autism in fifth grade and has since turned her journey into a source of empowerment and advocacy.
Mes is actively involved in school clubs including JustWrite, Academic Challenge, Biology Society, and Board Game Club. She has earned awards in JustWrite and Academic Challenge, and qualified for the state JustWrite competition this May. Outside the classroom, she volunteers at the Independence Public Library and with the Kiwanis Club’s Santa Delivery Program.
Driven by a desire to educate others about autism and neurodiversity, Mes openly shares her experiences and encourages peers to embrace differences. Her future aspirations include studying archaeology, anthropology, or creative writing, all fueled by her deep curiosity about the world and commitment to human rights and equity.
