On Saturday, May 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Independence High School will host the Out of the Darkness Walk, a community-driven event aimed at raising awareness and funds for suicide prevention. Sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the walk is part of a national movement to “Break the Stigma” surrounding mental health and support those affected by suicide.

Participants of all ages are welcome to join the walk, which will take place on a clearly marked route beginning at the student parking lot near the practice soccer fields. Walk-up registration will open at 10:30 a.m., with the option to register individually or as part of a group. In addition to the walk, the event will feature several community-building activities focused on mental health awareness and support.

“This is more than just a walk—it’s a statement of solidarity, compassion, and commitment to saving lives,” said School Counselor Kyle Kovach, Independence High School.

Funds raised will go directly to the AFSP to support research, education, advocacy, and support for survivors of suicide loss. Attendees are encouraged to register or donate via the event’s official website.

Community members are urged to spread the word and invite friends and family. “The more support we gather, the greater our impact on those who struggle with mental health,” said Kovach.
