Independence Primary School Art Show Takes Families Around the World

On the evening of March 7, more than 300 pieces of artwork created by Independence Primary School students were on display for their families to see at the school’s annual art show.  In keeping with tradition, the students, under the direction of Art Teacher Mike Gruber, created a mural.  This year was a little different though. In an effort to bring the school’s outdoor courtyard to life, it was the perfect opportunity to create an outdoor mural of color.  The mural, which is 5 feet tall by 14 feet long, is broken up into seven panels and features a vibrant floral design and pattern. Careful consideration was given to each color selection in order to complement the surrounding courtyard and the newly added plants from last year. It will be mounted and displayed in the courtyard this spring.

Art Teacher Mike Gruber secured a grant from the Ohio Lions Foundation Coffey Grants from the North Royalton Lions Club to cover the cost of the materials. The mural is mounted on weatherproof wood and will be sealed with epoxy to ensure it can last through all weather elements.

For the art show on March 7, families were able to travel to Canada, Africa, Mexico, China, and Australia. “The idea kind of came from Epcot at Disney and being able to show students artwork from all over the world,” said Gruber.  Each grade made two art projects, and each project was from one part of the world. Students, when they came to the show on March 7, had to visit that part of the world to find their work of art.  Each hallway was transformed to represent that part of the world which will include decor and music and the beautiful works of art.

At the evening art show, the Kona Ice Truck also was a highlight of the evening.  Families were entertained by the talented IPS choir in the gym. Families also enjoyed picking out books at the Scholastic Book Fair.

Gruber has worked with his kindergarten through fourth-grade students on an annual spring art show since 2010. These murals have become a tradition at the primary school.  Over the past, the students have created murals for the City of Independence bicentennial, Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavs, and even of their favorite teachers, including a mural in remembrance of Joan Sidor, the school’s beloved long-time music teacher, Cleveland Browns players and coach, Superheroes and zoo animals.

This art show is notable because students had the opportunity to travel to different parts of the world, immerse themselves in various cultures, view artwork, and create a piece of art inspired by their experiences.

“The mural will enhance our courtyard by adding vibrant colors and creating a welcoming environment for all students,” said Gruber.  “Students have a strong interest in the mural projects, as evidenced by their comments starting in kindergarten!  By proudly displaying the mural in the courtyard, it is likely to instill even more excitement among students to participate in outdoor lessons and inspire future generations when they get to create their own murals.”
