Veterans Day Program Honors Local Heroes at Independence Primary School

Independence Primary School hosted its annual Veterans Day program the morning of November 10 to honor veterans and active duty military members connected to the school community. The event featured musical performances, speeches, and time for students to personally thank the veterans for their service.

The morning began with approximately 30 veterans and their families gathering in the gymnasium for refreshments. Student Council representatives from grades 3 and 4 welcomed the guests and assisted them in getting settled before the full program began. Jen Krysiak and Lynn Metzger, Student Council advisors, along with the representatives, played a big part in the planning of the program.

At 9 a.m., second, third, and fourth-grade students filled into the gymnasium and took their seats. The program commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance, school pledge, and a special video message  welcoming and thanking our veterans. Principal TJ Ebert then individually recognized each veteran in attendance by military branch. As each branch was called, Student Council representatives proudly held up flags representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and POW/MIA.

Music teacher Shannon Jakubczak led students in patriotic songs including "America the Beautiful," "My Country 'Tis of Thee," and "God Bless America." The program concluded with the entire gymnasium joining voices to sing the "Star Spangled Banner" and final remarks from Student Council leaders.

After being dismissed at 9:25 a.m, first-grade students prepared a special song performance in the lobby in front of the school's veteran memorial mural. Veterans were then treated to a tour of the school guided by Student Council representatives. Kindergarten Buddies handed out personalized cards and cookies to cap off the tour. Finally, at 9:45 a.m. veterans gathered back in the lobby to hear an adorable round of patriotic songs performed by the kindergarten classes.

It was a memorable morning where Independence Primary School students and staff could give back to local heroes who have given so much to our community and country. Happy Veterans Day and thank you again to all who have served.
