Independence’s National American Sign Language Honor Society Presents An Introduction to ASL

On Monday, May 15, members of the Independence High School (IHS) American Sign Language Honor Society visited Independence Primary School (IPS) to introduce the students to the alphabet, teach them how to fingerspell their names, and share some of the more popular iconic* signs. After the lesson, the IPS students had the opportunity to paint their hands to simulate their favorite iconic sign.

IPS students choose what iconic sign they wanted to portray.

These pictures show the sign and the painting of the hand to show the sign ‘coming to life’.

This is a nod to famous Deaf DeVIA painter Chuck Baird’s artistic style.

Paint used on hands is Crayola Washable Kids Paint.
