Independence Local Schools News Article

June 19, 2020

Dear Families,

Now that the 2019-20 school year has concluded, our district is actively planning learning options for the start of the 2020-21 school year.  There have been no formal adjustments to the school calendar at this point.  We are also awaiting Ohio and Cuyahoga County guidelines for reopening, which should be unveiled in the next week or two.  Your feedback will help us plan as we operate within the guidelines.

Much of our planning will focus on health guidelines and how we have to modify school and student groupings.  We are also focused on improvements to our buildings.  We will be installing air purification systems within each of our schools.  These systems are both mercury free and zero ozone compliant.  The systems will proactively treat conditioned spaces, reducing airborne and surface contaminants and pollutants through bi-polar ionization technology.

We have developed more comprehensive cleaning and disinfecting procedures that will be followed each day for our buildings and buses.  Hand sanitizer stations will be readily available in classrooms and common areas of each building.   Educational posters will be placed throughout our buildings to remind students, staff, and visitors of key points in handwashing, COVID-19 symptoms, recommended hygiene practices, and other items that contribute to a culture of safe and healthy practices.

As state and county guidelines are finalized and shared with districts, the message from the departments has been consistent in that local districts will have some degree of autonomy on how to comply with the guidelines.  Parent, student, and staff feedback is an important part of developing these plans.  In the link below, you will find a survey to help us with our planning.

If you have multiple students in the district, you can complete multiple surveys if you would like to provide different answers.  Once you submit one survey, the option to "submit another response" will be available.

Thank you for the continued feedback and support. We appreciate and understand the uniqueness of this pandemic and its effect on all aspects of our country.  Our goal is to use these experiences to continually refine and improve the educational opportunities for our students.

Yours in education,

Ben Hegedish
