S.T.E.A.M. Learning

Students in grades K-4 take a S.T.E.A.M. class called Design Technology. S.T.E.A.M. stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. This hands-on class allows them to solve problems and foster teamwork and collaboration. Assigned challenges incorporate the design process which requires students to brainstorm, build, test, improve and present various projects.

Computer programming is also made available to our students, where all can experience a work-at-your-own pace coding course. This particular child-friendly program ensures students understand newly learned coding concepts before moving on to more challenging programming lessons.

We are also fortunate to have the ability to 3D print. Students use tinkercad to create and perfect cross curricular designs for print. By the time students are in third grade, they are using code to create stories and games using Scratch.

Independence Primary School has been recognized for progress demonstrated in S.T.E.A.M. education multiple times during the last several years, and more opportunities are on the horizon.

Student Health and Wellness

Independence Primary School works to instill appropriate values, affirm mental health and wellness, and kind behavior among the student body. Peace corners, Mindful Mondays, and a mental health and wellness celebration all work to promote these standards.

Our facilities have been upgraded to include flexible seating options in classrooms, a noise-reducing gymnasium space, flexible learning space, an outdoor learning pavilion constructed by the Kiwanis, an exclusive preschool playground, sensory rooms, and smart boards in all classrooms. The building’s amazing PTO organization is in large part responsible for helping supply so many innovative, safe and collaborative amenities. Students are rewarded with ongoing and regular awards such as High Five for excellence in various classes, Student of the Month awards, and Golden Ticket Winners. IPS leaders also presented on mental health and wellness strategies at regional and national conferences.
