football players

For the fifth consecutive year, members of the Independence Middle School football program demonstrated what it means to be a Blue Devil by volunteering at an annual Special Olympics event held on June 4. Nearly 20 football players and coaches dedicated a portion of their summer vacation to assist students, families, and staff throughout the event. Volunteers helped participants, cheered on athletes, assisted with activities, and enthusiastically tackled any task that was needed to ensure a successful day.

According to David Weiss, who has coordinated the partnership through his place of employment and is an IMS football coach, the IMS football volunteers once again made a lasting impact on everyone involved.

“Nearly 20 football players and coaches volunteered a good portion of a summer vacation day and they were, as they always have been, spectacular,” said Weiss. “They were engaged, helping my students, bringing enthusiasm, and doing any tasks they were asked to do. They were a joy to have at the event.”

The volunteers' efforts did not go unnoticed. Weiss shared that school administrators, staff members, and family spectators all commented on the positive attitudes and outstanding job performed by the student-athletes and coaches throughout the day. The annual tradition has become a meaningful opportunity for IMS football players to give back to the community while building connections with Special Olympics athletes.
