Hello, Independence community. I’m Superintendent Kelli Cogan, and thank you for joining me for our March In the Know update.
It is hard to believe that we are now in the last quarter of the 2025–2026 school year. We are proud of our students for all of their hard work both in and out of the classroom. Whether it is academics, the arts, athletics, or community service, it is incredible to see our students creating a legacy of excellence both on campus and throughout the community.
Before I continue, just a reminder that Spring Break is April 3 through April 10. Whether you are staying home or traveling someplace warm, we hope you enjoy this time to relax and spend it with your families. I also want to wish our IHS Marching Band and IHS Vocal Ensemble a wonderful time as they perform at Walt Disney World.
I would like to invite you to our district’s State of the Schools address on Tuesday, March 31 at 7 p.m. in the Independence Middle School auditorium. During this event, Treasurer Jennifer Knapp and I will share a comprehensive update on the district’s academic progress, financial outlook, and key initiatives shaping the future of Independence Local Schools. This includes information about the proposed PreK–8 school building on the May 5 ballot. This is a great opportunity for families, staff, and community members to hear directly from us and stay informed about the direction of our schools.
Independence Primary School has been recognized by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce for its outstanding commitment to student learning, achievement, and whole-child development. After submitting a comprehensive application through the National Blue Ribbon Schools process, the school was selected as a 2025 Blue Ribbon School. While the federal recognition program was discontinued and transitioned to the states this year, schools that were recognized are still being highlighted for excellence in education.
This recognition reflects a strong culture of collaboration, innovative learning opportunities, and a deep commitment to meeting the needs of every student. From hands-on STEM experiences and project-based learning to a focus on literacy through the Science of Reading, Independence Primary School continues to create an environment where students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
This is especially meaningful because it marks the third time Independence Primary School has earned Blue Ribbon recognition, previously receiving the honor in 1994 and again in 2012. It is a testament to the long-standing tradition of excellence within the school and the dedication of our educators, students, and families.
In addition, Independence Primary School was recently named a 2026 Governor’s Science of Reading Champion, recognizing the school’s commitment to evidence-based literacy instruction. Our teachers have engaged in extensive professional learning and are using structured literacy practices to ensure all students develop strong foundational reading skills. We are incredibly proud of their work and the positive impact it continues to have on student success.
We are also excited to share a wonderful opportunity for connection within our community. Independence High School students are inviting senior residents to a special event called Tech Help for Seniors. This will take place on Thursday, April 16 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Independence Civic Center.
During this event, students will provide hands-on assistance with everyday technology questions. Seniors can bring their phones, tablets, Kindles, or laptops and receive personalized help. Students will assist with things like organizing photos, navigating email, adjusting accessibility settings, and even learning about artificial intelligence.
This event is designed to be relaxed and welcoming while creating meaningful connections between our students and community members. Coffee and light refreshments will be provided. Seniors can stop by at any time, but signing up in advance is encouraged. You can register at the Civic Center, by emailing news@independence.k12.oh.us.
As always, thank you for your continued support of Independence Local Schools. We are grateful for a community that values education and supports our students and staff each day.
I hope to see many of you at the State of the Schools presentation, and until next time, thank you for staying In the Know.
