Ms. Haley Mueller was approved as the next principal of Independence Middle School at the May 20 Board of Education meeting. She replaces Jamie Vanek, who is leaving the district at the end of the school year.
Ms. Mueller, a seasoned educator with more than 10 years of experience, currently serves as associate principal at A.I. Root Middle School in Medina City Schools. Her career includes leadership roles as principal of Northeast Ohio College Preparatory School and as an instructional coach for multiple campuses. She began her career in education as a middle school social studies teacher at Akron Preparatory School. Her leadership style is characterized as student-centered, collaborative, and rooted in instructional excellence.
“Haley’s experience, values, and leadership style align directly with the priorities our community expressed,” said Superintendent Kelli Cogan. “She brings a deep understanding of middle-level education and a clear commitment to both academic and social-emotional growth.”
Throughout the selection process, stakeholders emphasized the need for a leader who is visible, relational, and instructional. Ms. Mueller's record of facilitating professional development, implementing PBIS strategies, and building strong school cultures resonated with those expectations.
"I am incredibly honored to join the Independence Middle School community as the new principal,” said Ms. Mueller. “I am deeply student-centered and bring with me a strong belief in the power of positive energy to inspire growth and connection. I'm thrilled to be part of this amazing district and look forward to partnering with our dedicated staff, supportive families, and outstanding students. It is truly a privilege to become part of a special place that is Independence."
Ms. Mueller received her Master of Education Administration from Cleveland State University and her Bachelor of Science in Education from Kent State University. She resides in Parma with her three children Jolie (6), Jemma (4), and Joshua Jr. (10 months).
Ms. Mueller is expected to begin a 10-day extended contract shortly to transition into her new role before the school year concludes.
She will officially begin as principal in August 2025.
