Independence High School Athletic Hall of Fame Welcomes Four New Inductees

During the weekend of February 5 and 6, the 28th annual Independence Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was conducted. During halftime at the Independence versus Cuyahoga Heights Boys Varsity Basketball game on Friday, February 5, four former Independence High School athletes were inducted. The athletes were Matt Grendel, Arian Martin, Megan Osysko and Hannah Stretar Wyman.

Matt Grendel participated on the Independence Basketball team where he received three letters. During his time on the team he was named Team Captain in 2008, two-time Plain Dealer Player of the Week in 2008 and the Team MVP for 2007 and 2008. He also holds the school record for most points scored in a single game (46), most points scored in a single season (581) and the highest single season average (26.4). While on the team, they attended the First Team All-Conference in 2007 and 2008, the First Team Division III All-District in 2008, Second Team Division III All-State in 2008 and was named First Team All-Sun in 2008.

Arian Martin participated on the Independence Volleyball Team where she received four letters. During her time on the team she was named Team Captain in 2006 and 2007. She helped her team receive the following titles; First Team All-Conference in 2005 and 2006, First Team Division III All-District in 2006, Conference Team Champions in 2005, 2006 and 2007, Division III District Team Champions in 2007 and Division III Regional Runners-Up in 2007. Besides Volleyball, Arian also participated in Track and Field where she received four letters. She was also a Regional Qualifier for the High Jump in 2006, 2007 and 2008. She also her team claim the titles First Team All-Conference in 2006 and 2008 and Conference Team Champions in 2008.

Megan Osysko participated on the Independence Volleyball Team where she received four letters. During her time on the team she was named Team Captain in 2007 and Team MVP in 2006. She helped lead the team to be the First Team All-Conference in 2005, 2006 and 2007, First Team All-Sun 2006 and 2007, First Team Division III All-District in 2006 and 2007, Division III District Champions in 2007, Division III Regional Runners-up in 2007, CVC Conference MVP in 2007 and Division III All-District MVP in 2007. Megan also participated in Basketball where she received three letters and helped her team receive the following titles; First Team All-Conference in 2006, 2007 and 2008, First Team All-Sun in 2008 and Conference Team Champions in 2006 and 2007. Lastly, she participated in softball where she received three letters. In 2008 she was named Independence High School Female Athlete of the year and given the St. Michael’s Russell Barnes Award. She also helped her team receive the following titles; First Team All-Conference in 2008 and Conference Team Champions in 2006 and 2007.

Hannah Stretar Wyman participated in Cross Country at Independence where she received three letters and was named Team Captain in 2007. She also participated in Basketball where she received four letters and was named Team MVP in 2007, Team Captain in 2008 and Sun Newspaper’s Player of the Week in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Her team was also named Conference Team Champions in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Lastly, Hannah participated in Softball where she received four letters and was named Team Captain in 2007 and 2008 and Team MVP in 2008. She helped lead her team to receive the following titles; First Team All-Conference in 2006, 2007 and 2008, CVC Conference MVP in 2008, First Team Division III All-District in 2008 and Conference Team Champions in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

All of these students were officially inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, February 6 at Independence High School.

“We are extremely proud to be inducting these fine athletes into the Independence Athletic Hall of Fame,” said Tim Skoczen, athletic director, Independence Local Schools. “These athletes will now be preserved as role models for IHS athletes for years to come.”
