Guiding Star Award Recipients Announced for First Semester
Guiding Star Award Recipients Announced for First Semester Independence Local Schools revealed the recipients of their first semester “Guiding Star” awards on January 14.

Dr. Rick Fierer, fifth through eighth grade enrichment reading teacher at Independence Middle School, received the “Guiding Star” Teacher Award for his hard work and dedication. Along with his award that was presented by Dollar Bank, he received a $250 professional development grant from the Independence Educational Foundation, flowers and a gift certificate from Independence Flowers and Gift, as well as a $25 gift certificate to Brielle’s Coffee and Tea Room courtesy of Tulip Tree Quilts.

Fierer was nominated by his students Karah and Thorin Chappel. Here is an excerpt from their nomination, “Dr. Fierer has greatly impacted our lives and continues to do so. When we began in his enrichment class in fifth grade, we knew he would be one of our favorite teachers. His unfathomable knowledge of literature and phenomenal vocabulary clearly demonstrates that he has a passion for what he teaches. He allows students to discover and advance at their own pace with learning and development as his foremost goals. Dr. Fierer is every inch an incredible teacher who helps us hear the siren song of literature and learning. He constantly goes above and beyond the expectations set for a teacher.”

Scott Stasek, custodian at Independence Middle School, received the “Guiding Star” Support Staff Award for the dedication and support he shows to the school. Besides his award that was presented by Dollar Bank, he also received a $250 Visa gift card from the Independence Educational Foundation, flowers and a gift certificate from Independence Flowers and Gifts, as well as a $25 gift certificate to Brielle’s Coffee and Tea Room courtesy of Tulip Tree Quilts.

Stasek was nominated by his colleague, Judy Borowy. Here is an excerpt from his nomination, “Scott is always willing to do whatever is asked of him. He comes in early on the weekends, he keeps our building in tip top shape both inside and out, he is also called on to drive the school buses when needed. Scott is always willing to lend a hand and does so in a professional and friendly manner.”

“Both Rick and Scott are very deserving of this award for the enthusiasm and dedication they bring to the students and staff every day. I am thankful for the devotion Rick, Scott and all the faculty members bring to the Independence Local School District students and families,” said Superintendent of Independence Local Schools Ben Hegedish.
