Students in the Foods 101 class at Independence High School had the opportunity to make a four-course meal under the direction of a professional chef.

On January 10, Thomas George, Resident District Manager of Dining at the University of Akron came to three classes accompanied by his Chef, Nick Vidovic. The Foods 101 classes are taught by Mrs. Kelsey Whitacre.

Each of the three classes began with George talking about his food career followed by Vidovic taking the class through preparing the food at their station by using the recipe provided. The stations included an appetizer, salad, entrée, and dessert. George and Vidovic provided the food and brought the products partially prepared to expedite the cooking process and allow students to make all four courses.

The students in each class were broken up into four groups and sent to one of the four workstations. The completed meal included a bruschetta with a crostini, a garden salad with dill vinaigrette, a mushroom and bacon gnocchi, and fruit crepes. After cooking the food, students presented their dishes to the class for tasting and to the Chef for an evaluation.
