Independence High School (IHS) is participating in the fifth annual Playhouse Square Dazzle Awards program presented by Pat and John Chapman this school year. With the aim of inspiring performance and recognizing the importance of musical theater and arts education in Northeast Ohio high schools, the program is affiliated with the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (“The Jimmy Awards”) presented by The Broadway League Foundation.
“I am excited about the opportunity for our students to grow as actors, performers and musicians through this program. The students pour their hearts into these productions and this year, the show won’t be over when the curtain closes. We get to go on and celebrate it with the whole high school theater community in Northeast Ohio,” said Musical Director Gretchen Obrovac, Independence High School.
“Independence High School has had a long, distinguished record in the performing arts. We are deeply honored to take part in Playhouse Square’s Dazzle Awards program. The thousands of hours per year that our students invest in our performing arts is truly special. It really gives students a chance to shine, both on the stage and behind the scenes,” said Principal Bill McGuinness, Independence High School.
The music and arts program at Independence High School includes the Vocal Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Marching Band and the annual musical. Recent past productions include Rock of Ages: High School Edition, Anything Goes and Mary Poppins. The fine arts programs are open to all students in grades 9-12. This year’s musical will be announced in a few weeks.
The Playhouse Square Dazzle Awards program offers arts education opportunities throughout the school year and culminates with the Dazzle Awards ceremony on May 16, 2020. Awards are presented to outstanding musical theater productions and students in 14 categories, including Best Musical, Best Actor/Actress, Best Student Orchestra, Best Costume Design and Best Scenic Design. Nominations and awards are based on the evaluations of an independent panel of adjudicators.
The winners of the Best Actor and Actress categories represent Northeast Ohio at The Jimmy Awards in June 2020.
